The Hechtbrunnen is a historic fountain and a well-known landmark in the old town of Zug. The fountain was built in 1670 to wash freshly caught fish at the fish market.
A scale for the fish trade was also carved into the edge of the fountain. However, today's fountain figure, a boy holding a pike in his arms, was not made until 1956 by sculptor Andreas Kögler.
The bronze sculpture by Peter Kögler crowns the simple, rectangular stone fountain, which was erected in 1957 to commemorate the so-called pike fountain from the 16th century.
The name of the fountain is derived from the sculpture of a pike perched on top of the fountain. The pike sculpture is made of bronze and shows a kneeling boy pulling a large pike ashore. The pike symbolizes fishing, which used to be an important economic activity in the Zug region.
