What is Swisstainable?
The Swiss Tourism Association and Switzerland Tourism have launched Swisstainable. The program supports businesses and destinations as they gradually improve their performance in various areas of sustainability. All tourism businesses and organizations in Switzerland are eligible to participate.
The same basic requirements apply to all participating businesses: a commitment to sustainable development, an assessment of their current status using the sustainability checklist, and a plan with concrete measures. Depending on the level, additional recognized evidence or certifications may be required.
The three levels
- Level I committed: The business meets the program’s basic requirements. It is committed to sustainable development, completes the sustainability check, and defines concrete measures.
- Level II – Engaged: The business meets the program’s basic requirements. In addition, it demonstrates its commitment in selected areas through recognized sustainability certification. The respective certification body conducts an external review of this certification.
- Level III: Leading—The business meets the program’s basic requirements. In addition, it holds a comprehensive, recognized sustainability certification, which is also externally verified.
Zug Tourism with Swisstainable
Zug Tourism meets the program’s basic requirements. For Level II (engaged), Zug Tourism demonstrates its commitment with two recognized certifications that are valid together under the program:
- Cause We Care: Through this initiative by myclimate, Zug Tourism is committed to climate protection in tourism.
- OK:GO: Through this initiative for accessible tourism, Zug Tourism publishes information on accessibility so that guests with disabilities can plan their visit.
Other measures include:
- Zug Card: With the Zug Card guest card, Zug Tourism promotes excursions via public transportation. From June 15 to August 31, 2026, overnight guests in the canton of Zug were able to use buses and boats for free with the Zug Card. Over 1,000 guests took advantage of the offer.
- Internal Sustainability Training: Employees receive training on sustainable work practices once a year.
- Clean-Up Day: Zug Tourism participates in Clean-Up Day to combat littering.
- Sustainability Summit: Zug Tourism organizes an annual event where the tourism industry exchanges experiences and solutions.
