Did you know that nature-based travel or ecotourism is a major growth trend? According to Euromonitor, this trend is one of the "Top 10 Global Consumer Trends" (Euromonitor, 2019). The trend is no longer limited to millennials, but has now reached the heart of society. Switzerland has also decided to be climate-neutral by 2050 and has enshrined this in its national tourism strategy.

Swisstainable program

Both Swiss Tourism and the Swiss Tourism Federation have recognized this and launched the "Swisstainable" programme. This sustainability program aims to give greater visibility to the commitment and promote sustainable efforts by tourism service providers.

Swisstainable participation Zug region

For the Tourism Region Zug, where I work as Head of Marketing and Sustainability, culture and nature are its greatest treasures. The canton of Zug has a lot to offer, from long-standing traditions such as swinging to large protected moors. Zug Tourism wants to preserve these treasures and is working with various service providers to preserve culture and nature in the canton.

The Swisstainable program of the Swiss Tourism Federation gives more visibility to the sustainable commitment of businesses and refrains from introducing new certifications. The label recognizes existing and established certifications.

Levels and benefits of the Swisstainable program

This program is divided into the following levels:

  • Level I - committed - Commitment to sustainability, but no proof of sustainability
  • Level II - engaged - Commitment including action plan. Evidence is also required
  • Level III - leading - Companies that already have comprehensive and recognized sustainability certification

Zug Tourism also participates in the Swisstainable program and is currently classified as Level I - committed.

The Swisstainable program has the following advantages for you:

  1. No more jungle of sustainable labels, but a quick and easy overview of sustainable businesses.
  2. Support the sustainable commitment of tourism businesses
  3. Make a positive contribution to sustainable travel.
